3 Unit Assessment – Recap  Flexible and open Assessment Standards and Evidence Requirements in Units  Greater range of techniques and methodologies for assessment – encouraged  Assessments can be designed to provide evidence across more than one outcome or Unit – combined assessments  More opportunities to gather naturally occurring evidence – assessment as part of learning and teaching

4 Unit Assessment Support Purpose As at Higher, Advanced Higher Assessment Support will be provided which you can use to: Assess your candidates Adapt for your own assessment programmes Help you develop your own assessments your own assessments

5 Key messages from Verification 2013-14 Use valid and reliable assessments  There were good examples of Centre-devised questions  If modifying SQA-produced UASPs, care should be taken to ensure that if the terminology of the Assessment Standard is changed, the meaning remains clear  When Centres have designed workbooks for bi-level use, care should be taken not to disadvantage the lower-level candidates by asking them to go beyond the Assessment Standard for that level

6 Key messages from Verification 2013-14 Making assessment judgements  Centres are accurately assessing Performance Skills across all levels  Centres should ensure that candidates give the correct depth of answer to meet the Assessment Standard eg some candidates had ‘described’ but not ‘explained’  Centres should clearly indicate on a candidate’s written work where the assessment judgement has been made  There is evidence of good practice in internal verification for Performance Skills

9 Unit Assessment Support at Advanced Higher – Key Features Valid from August 2015 Complements and supports learning and teaching Assess competence against Unit Outcomes and Assessment Standards Designed to encourage professional judgement Provide broad-based tasks – allow assessors to choose appropriate context and forms of evidence Show range of approaches to generating assessment evidence Give information on the type of evidence which could be gathered

10 Unit Assessment Support at Advanced Higher – Approaches Package 1: Unit by Unit approach Provide discrete assessment tasks for each Unit (October 2014) Package 2: Portfolio approach Provides examples of learning activities which could generate naturally occurring evidence (February 2015) Package 3: Combined approach Groups together all Outcomes and Assessment Standards from both Units in one assessment task (April 2015)
