New FLO Ideas from peers Annotated examples from pilot topics

Welcome message Uses the HTML Block to provide teacher presence: Smiling face and natural pose Conversational tone Encourages feedback Short (around 100 words) Provides contact details More options: Add audio greeting Create a ‘Feedback activity’ to get feedback

More uses for HTML block … Use of graphic and HTML block to promote textbook Adds colour and interest More options: Provide hyperlink to bookshop and/or for more information about the book

Student introductions Uses the Label resource and with a Forum activity for creating social presence and bonds between students: ‘ Meet & Greet’ activity label suggests a socialising context for the forum Enabled tick box allows students to track completed tasks More options: Provide prompts/stimuli for responses in the forum activity, for example, ‘tell us about a personal achievement or ambition related to this topic’

Topic outline Familiar image in the opening paragraph immediately grabs attention and matches content Uncluttered layout with good use of space between paragraphs and bold text More options: Create hyperlinks to resources and activities See next slide for further options … Note: Don’t use Topic outline for a ‘Welcome’ statement if also using a Welcome block. Uses the Topic Outline (default) module to provide ‘global’ content for the topic, providing context for the whole topic which cannot be minimised.

Topic outline cont… Coloured background effectively defines topic-wide content – note: requires additional coding to create this effect as it is not a FLO option Assessments are provided at the start of the topic Labels are used to provide a description for resources and activities More options: All topic and assessment – related resources in one place (in respective folders)

Assignments Note: Created in module 9 Note: How assignments appear on student home page when due date is active Uses a modular approach suited to this type of assessment More options: Add extra space around labels

Descriptions and titling Uses effective description of resources and activities for easy identification Descriptive titles for resources are provided Minimises search More options Provide Labels with context and purpose for Discussion activity Insert extra space before headings

Labels: more creative ideas Uses one click to open resources providing immediacy Video embedded in label with context included More options: Use for audio files

Modular format Using this format provide an ‘open’ unrestricted structure to organising content Use of labels to provide context Uncluttered layout Signalling with the words ‘Start here’ Logical organisation

Weekly format (Example 1) Good match of photo to title Logical organisation More options: Add labels to provide context for activity and resources

Weekly format (Example 2) Eye-catching graphic Starts with a quiz (activity) as a pre- test PowerPoint slides as a PDF allows opening inside window on one click More options: Add labels to provide context for quiz activity and resources Include subject title for the week (see examples 1 and 3) Note: different order shown here in dates/week titling to previous example

Weekly format (Example 3) Use cartoons or other eye catching graphics to highlight a specific resource Use of humour Content title ‘Climate law’ included in heading More options: Use Label as a spacer between resources and activities Note: Don’t use all upper case (see USEFUL READINGS) – this is known as ‘shouting’ and is generally considered poor etiquette on the web
