Why is not having clean water a problem?  Every day, nearly 1,000 children under 5 die from diarrhea caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and improper hygiene.  More children die every day from diarrhea caused by unsafe water than from AIDS or malaria.  Worldwide, 748 million people lack access to clean water. More than 90 percent of them live in rural areas.
