1 CAPPIES = Critics and Awards Program High School equivalent to Broadway’s Tony Awards Applies to stage plays and musicals 68 Schools participate in the National Capital area (including 7 schools in Loudoun County) LVHS sends their critics to other shows. They write reviews and vote for awards. In return, other critics attend our shows, write reviews, and possibly nominate us for awards. VIP Awards Gala includes awards and performances of select nominees at the Kennedy Center. We have the potential of performing on the Kennedy Center Stage! GOAL: improve performances and performers with constructive critiques, and understand how we can improve our performances

2 LVHS must have at least 5 critics – We are looking at 9 plus 2 alternates Our team is required to have the following: – Each critic must see 5 shows and submit reviews – Our team must have at least 3 critics at any given team show – Positive attitude and professional representation of our school Each team member is responsible for the following: – Must attend training in October – Must attend 5 shows – Reviews must be submitted on time the day after the performance – Must communicate about absences to CAPPIES and schedule make ups ASAP – Must attend voting day – Dates TBD You can be a critic and be in LVHS shows

3 CAPPIES partners with The Washington Post Young Journalist Development Program Additional training is available Visit on Facebook WashPost Young Journalists Development Program Potentially can be published in Community Relations section of washingtonpost.com or local publications Awards given for critic teams and individual critics

4 Arrive at least 45 minutes before the performance – Review eligibility materials – Eat dinner – Discuss the play/musical with colleagues from other schools Process – Mentors lead discussion of the production 15 minutes before the beginning of the performance – be prepared with your research on the show – Critics see the performance for free – Critics sit together in the critic section – Mentors lead discussion of the production at intermission – Mentors lead discussion of the production at the end of the show – Mentors will dismiss at approximately 10:30 – call your parents when the post show discussion begins – don’t be late – Be familiar with all rules – you may want to print them and keep them with you – Must comply with rules for discussion (including no interaction with host school) Any parents/chaperones must purchase tickets

5 Goal: constructive critique Must conform to required organization format – 300-600 words – Discuss history of show – Discuss the show – Wrap it up Must meet guidelines for content Is shared with host school and performers Be prepared to meet the due date for review – Friday show – Saturday show – Sunday show

7 Apply to be a critic 1.Complete application form 2.Complete a writing sample - Write one positive and one negative review according to the rubric 3.Submit application and samples to Mr. Staggs in the Black Box by noon, Monday, September 21 st 4.2016 Critics list posted by COB Monday, September 28 th 5.First orientation meting – 7:00, Wednesday September 30 th at the Poirier’s house.
