1
Animal Kingdom Animalia
2
Animals Multicellular Heterotrophs Most have muscles and nervous tissue for movement Keep internal body conditions the same (homeostasis) Reproduce (most sexually)
3
Asymmetrical – Sponges (no recognizable shape)
4
Radial – Jellyfish circular shape -> several lines of symmetry
5
Bilateral right half looks very similar to left half
6
Nervous System – Detecting Stimulus and body control
7
Muscular System - movement
8
Circulatory System Moving O 2 and nutrients
9
Respiratory System Gas exchange with the environment
10
Digestive System Digest and absorb food
11
Excretory System Dispose of waste
12
Invertebrate Animals No backbone Approximately 95% of animals are invertebrates!
13
Vertebrate Animals- Possess a Backbone Advanced organ systems: allow bigger sizes and better movement
14
Bellringer 2/4/16 Unit 5 Standard: Animal and Plant Kingdoms Learning Target: I can describe the major characteristics of animals Read “Mathematics of Symmetry” (pgs. 300- 301) and “Animals with Bilateral Symmetry” on page 302 and answer: * Explain what bilateral symmetry is and give two examples of animals that have it.
15
Bellringer 2/4/16 * Explain what bilateral symmetry is and give two examples of animals that have it. If there is only one line that divides the body into 2 similar halves (left and right). Examples: dog, cat, birds, fish, snake, etc.
16
Bellringer 2/5/16 Unit 5 Standard: Animal and Plant Kingdoms Learning Target: All targets from Unit 5 (Plant and Animals) Look at the diagram on page 279 and answer: 1) What flower structure produces pollen? 2) What flower structures produce seeds and fruit?
17
Bellringer 2/5/16 1) What flower structure produces pollen? Anther 2) What flower structures produce seeds and fruit? Ovule -> seeds Ovary -> fruit
18
Bellringer 2/8/16 Unit 5 Standard: Animal and Plant Kingdoms Learning Target: I can describe reproduction in Angiosperms Read “Reproduction in Angiosperms” (pg. 278 – the whole section) and answer: What are the 2 ways that the text describe pollination can occur? (Explain how the pollen gets there)
19
Bellringer 2/8/16 * What are the 2 ways that text describe pollination can occur? By the wind, and by animals (birds, bats and insects) that get coated with pollen when they feed from the plant. Extra info: These animals are called “pollinators”.
20
Bellringer 2/9/16 Unit 5 Standard: Animal and Plant Kingdoms Learning Target: I can describe reproduction in Angiosperms Based on the diagram on page 279 of the textbook, describe the life cycle of an Angiosperm.
21
Bellringer 2/9/16 Based on the diagram on page 279 of the textbook, describe the life cycle of an Angiosperm. Tree produces flowers -> anther produces pollen -> pollen are trapped on stigma -> pollen grows a tube into the ovule -> sperm cell fertilizes the egg -> ovule develops into a seed -> ovary develops into fruit -> seed in fruit grows into a new plant
22
Bellringer 2/10/16 Unit 5 Standard: Animal and Plant Kingdoms Learning Target: I can describe the function of animal organ systems Based on your notes and previous knowledge, answer: 1) What is the main function of the nervous system? 2) What is the main function of the bone / muscle system?
23
Bellringer 2/10/16 1) What is the main function of the nervous system? Uses senses, nerves and brain to respond to stimulus and control bodily functions 2) What is the main function of the bone / muscle system? Provides the organism with support and movement
24
Bellringer 2/11/16 Unit 5 Standard: Animal and Plant Kingdoms Learning Target: I can describe the function of animal organ systems Based on your notes and previous knowledge, answer: 1) What is the main function of the circulatory system? 2) What is the main function of the digestive system?
