AIG Program Overview

*Academically gifted : above grade level in one or more academic areas. “Strong student” *Intellectually gifted : high I.Q./ aptitude scores in comparison to peers. Gifted programs VARY by county/state. Each has unique placement criteria. “One program does not fit all”

3-5 SOAR Resource: students attend class in the AIG classroom with other A.I.G. peers. Students are exposed to project based units that extend and enrich classroom experiences. Grade 3/4/5 students: 2 hours/week Project Based or Integrated Units that extend/enrich the curriculum Utilize the CCS AIG Curriculum Goals 1-2 LIFT Program: a minimum of 15 lessons in each 1 st and 2 nd grade classroom that nurture thinking skills and gifted potential. 30-45 minute time blocks Whole group and small group lessons Utilizes PETS curriculum Modeling for classroom teachers Platform for observation of students

Once a student qualifies for AIG Resource, he/she is served without further testing until the end of 5 th grade. Students must continue to perform at an elevated level in the classroom to be pulled out for AIG services. Students are re-evaluated at the end of 5 th grade for AIG middle school placement. Meetings will be held at the beginning of each new school year for parents of current AIG Students, as well as NEW AIG students’ parents to discuss the AIG plans for the year.

Exposes gifted learners to “novelty studies” that extend and enrich the curriculum. AIG Resource classes do NOT instruct math or reading at an advanced level. Skills that will prepare gifted learners for a globally competitive world are practiced in each unit. Staggered Scheduling Try to pull students out of regular classroom from 2 different subjects (Ex: I hour from Math, 1 hour from Science) Missed Classwork While many classroom teachers do not give AIG students work from time missed, if they do, we must encourage our students to make up this work. Good PR. Classroom work is #1 Priority Emphasize to students that their performance on regular classroom tests and assignments is critical to their continued participation in AIG Resource. They need to show they can handle it.
