2 Pearl Harbor: December 7, 1941. Japanese planes attacked Hawaii by surprise and almost destroyed the Pacific Fleet. Island-Hopping: was a military strategy employed by the Allies in the Pacific War against Japan and the Axis powers during World War II. Hideki Tojo: Japanese army officer who initiated the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and who assumed dictatorial control of Japan during WWII Nanjing massacre: the Japanese committed a series of atrocities against innocent civilians, including mass execution & raping

3 Japan is the 1 st Asian country to industrialize Japan is a small country (island)- needs to import raw/natural materials Japan plans to expand to an Empire: 1931 – Japanese soldiers take over Manchuria, China 1937 – Full scale war between China vs. Japan ***Nanjing Massacre***

4 Thousands of victims are beheaded, burned, bayoneted, buried alive, or disemboweled. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians and disarmed soldiers are murdered. 20,000– 80,000 men, women and children are raped by soldiers of the Japanese Army.
