Health Care In Child Care Chapter 4
2
Managing Health in a Child Care Setting Success depends on 1. Learning to identify infectious diseases 4 modes of transmission 2.Knowing how to prevent spread of disease –Immunization and sanitation 3. Knowing when to exclude a child –Child is highly contagious and/or can’t participate in the program
3
Identifying Infectious Disease Health policy should state that any child who exhibits serious infectious disease symptoms should be excluded Ex. Fever, vomiting, severe cough Other disease symptoms should be monitored Ex. Runny nose, complaints of head or stomach ache (See table 4.5)
4
Respiratory Tract Transmitted Diseases Are occasionally life threatening EX TB, meningitis See Table 4.1 Many of these diseases are easily transmitted so immunization and exclusion are key to controlling the more serious illnesses
5
Ear Infection (otitis media) The second most frequently diagnosed childhood disease The cold is contagious, not the ear infection
6
Fecal-Oral Transmitted Diseases These diseases are spread through bacteria, parasites, and viruses that grow in the intestines and are present in the child’s stools Universal Sanitary Practices are important in preventing spread of these diseases See Table 4.2 Demos: hand washing, diapering, coughing and sneezing, removing gloves
7
Transmitted Diseases, cont’d Direct Contact (secretions or parasites): can spread rapidly See Table 4.3 Carried in the blood : Hep B and HIV/AIDS If anyone (staff or child) has a blood-borne infectious disease, a stronger cleaning solution is recommended See Table 4.4
8
Managing Infectious Diseases Immunizations Sanitary practices Exclusion See Table 4.5 Notification of Public Health Officials See Table 4.6 Notification of Parents
9
Managing Mildly Ill Children Is the child contagious and how serious is the illness? EX cold V strep throat Can the child participate in the program? Can the child’s needs be met? See Table 4.7
10
Administering Medicines See Table 4.8 NOTE: In CA administering a medicine does not need a doctor’s note either for prescriptions or over-the-counter medicines
11
Implications Observation Education Supervision Cultural sensitivity
