In 1911 Japan invaded and took control over the Korean peninsula. Japan controlled Korea until 1945 North Korea

With the Japanese surrender at the end of WWII they were forced to give up control over Korea. The Allies split the country into two sections to make it easier to control and manage after the war. North Korea

The United States was responsible for South Korea and installed a free and democratic government. The Soviet Union was responsible for North Korea and installed a communist government. North Korea

Kim Il Sung took control of North Korea He invaded the South in 1950 triggering the Korean War When he died in 1994, his son Kim Jong Il assumed power North Korea

The people of North Korea still consider the dead Kim Il Sung to be the permanent leader of North Korea. Even today, he is referred to as the “Eternal Leader”
