CHAPTER 25.1

NONCOMMUNICABLE DISEASES NONCOMMUNICABLE DISEASE-IS A DISEASE THAT IS NOT TRANSMITTED BY ANOTHER PERSON, OR A VECTOR, NOR FROM THE ENVIRONMENT.
4
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE (CVD)- IS A DISEASE THAT AFFECTS THE HEART AND BLOOD CELLS. THE HEARTS JOB IS TO PUMP BLOOD (WHICH CARRIES OXYGEN) TO ALL PARTS OF YOUR BODY. WITHOUT THAT OXYGEN THE CELLS IN YOUR BODY WOULD DIE THEREFORE CREATING A RISK FOR CERTAIN CVD’S.
5
TYPES OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES 1.HYPERTENSION- HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. -IF HBP CONTINUES OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME IT WILL DAMAGE THE MAIN PARTS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM, WHICH ARE THE HEART, BLOOD, AND BLOOD VESSELS. -THIS USUALLY OCCURS IN PEOPLE 35 AND OLDER. -BESURE TO GET YOUR BP CHECKED FREQUENTLY BECAUSE CVD IS KNOWN AS THE SILENT KILLER BECAUSE IT USUALLY HAS NO SYMPTOMS IN ITS EARLY STAGES.
6
2. ATHEROSCLEROSIS- THE PROCESS IN WHICH PLAQUE ACCUMULATES ON THE ARTERY WALLS. -AT BIRTH THE LINING OF THE ARTERIES BLOOD VESSELS ARE SMOOTH AND ELASTIC. -OVER TIME TOBACCO SMOKE, HBP, OR HIGH CHOLESTEROL CAN DAMAGE THESE LININGS THEREFORE CREATING PLAQUE.
7
DISEASES OF THE HEART 1.ANGINA PECTORIS 2.ARRHYTHMIAS 3.HEART ATTACK 4.CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE 5.STROKE
8
DISEASES OF THE HEART 1.ANGINA PECTORIS- CHEST PAIN THAT RESULTS WHEN THE HEART DOES NOT GET ENOUGH OXYGEN. - IT LASTS ONLY FROM SECONDS TO MINUTES. - ITS MAIN CAUSE IS FROM ATHEROSCLEROSIS. 2.ARRHYTHMIAS- IRREGULAR HEART BEATS. - ONE TYPE OF ARRHYTHMIA IS CALLED VENTRICULAR FIBRILLATION. THIS IS WHEN THE HEART BEAT BECOMES TO RAPID CAUSING A CARDIAC ARREST, WHICH MEANS THAT THE HEART STOPS BEATING WITHOUT ANY WARNING.
9
3.HEART ATTACK- THIS OCCURS WHEN THERE IS DAMAGE TO THE HEART MUSCLE CAUSED BY REDUCED OR BLOCKED BLOOD SUPPLY. THE WARNING SIGNS OF A HEART ATTACK: -ONE IN FOUR HEART ATTACKS PRODUCE NO SYMPTOMS.
10
4. CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE- THIS IS WHEN THE HEART GRADUALLY WEAKENS AND CAN NOT MAINTAIN ITS REGULAR PUMPING RATE AND FORCE. 5. STROKE- WHEN ARTERIAL BLOCKAGE INTERRUPTS THE FLOW OF BLOOD AND OXYGEN TO THE BRAIN.
11
RISK FACTORS OF CVD THAT ARE CONTROLLABLE P.693 -TOBACCO USE -HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE -HIGH CHOLESTEROL -PHYSICAL INACTIVITY -EXCESS WEIGHT -STRESS -DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE
12
RISK FACTORS OF CVD THAT ARE NOT CONTROLLABLE P.693 1.HEREDITY- IF PARENT HAD CVD YOU HAVE A GOOD CHANCE AT GETTING. 2.GENDER- MEN HAVE A GREATER RISK AT DEVELOPING CVD AND HAVING A HEART ATTACK. 3.AGE- AS YOU GET OLDER THE RISK OF CVD INCREASES. -80% 0F PEOPLE THAT DIE FROM CVD ARE 65 AND OLDER.
