Historical Overview  The Elizabethan Era was named after Queen Elizabeth who was crowned In January 1559 and died march of 1603.  1563- people were dying of the plague  1564- peace made between England and France at Troyes  1584- Sir Walter found the first American colony and names it Virginia after Elizabeth the Virgin queen

3. Fashion overview  Fashion in these days was Distinctive and striking  They used Elements of design such as shape( how it fits and compliments your body), texture( how it feels), and colour  They used principles of design such as Emphasis( what catches your eye and draws attention away from problem spots)rhythm( line, shape, and colour), and proportion(relationship of size, length and width)

4. Sumptuary Laws  In this time there was laws dictating what people were allowed to wear. They could not wear whatever they liked no matter how wealthy they were.This was so people could determine their status just by looking at them. The colour, shape and even fabric were dictated by the sumptuary laws. If you broke these laws you could be arrested or even killed.

5. Women’s fashion Upper class Jewels Headgear Makeup Extravegant coloured clothes Ruffles, hoop skirts, corsets Long dresses that covered their legs Lower Class They wore browns, beiges, blacks and whites Bonnets Tight front laced bodice Shoulder straps Square sleeved shift

6. Men’s Fashion Upper Class Embroidered vest like shirts called Jerkins Buttons down the front Sleeves were often decorated and loose fitting Loose fitting pants padded with horse hair stockings Lower Class Less flashy version of upper class men. Loose fitting pants and shirt

7. Prominent Artists, and writers of this time  Shakespeare was very big at this time. Some of the plays that he wrote were Hamlet, Romeo and Juilet, twelfth night, King Lear, and Macbeth
