Pablo Picasso 1881-1973

Pablo Picasso was born in Spain in 1881. He made many pieces of art throughout his life. Most of his artwork is broken up into 3 Periods. Blue Period 1901-1904 Rose Period 1904-1906 Cubism Period 1906-1912

The Blue Period Artwork is gloomy and dark. Used tints and shades of blues and blue-greens. Woman with Folded Arms The Old Guitarist Mother and Child

The Rose Period Artwork is more cheery. Picasso often painted images of circus life. Used reds, oranges and pinks. Garçon à la Pipe Harlequin with a Guitar Acrobat and Young Harlequin

The Cubism Period Artwork is very geometric and uses lots of angles. Used a variety of colors, often earth tones. The Three Musicians Violin and Candlestick Les Demoiselles d’Avignon’

~Now that you have seen some of Picasso’s work, what differences do you see between his artwork and the work of other artists we have studied this year? ~We will base our project off of Picasso’s Blue and Cubism Periods. What do you notice about the colors used during the Blue Period?

You will be creating a Picasso-like painting that uses characteristics from both the Blue Period as well as the Cubism Period. Since guitars and other musical instruments make an appearance in many of Picasso’s paintings, we will be painting musical instruments. Your project will look similar to the one below. We will use tints and shades of a cool color to paint the picture. We will also use a collage technique to incorporate sheet music into the background.
