2 New Zealand

3 Indigenous People Maori People – The Maori people are the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and first arrived here in waka hourua (voyaging canoes) from their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki over 1000 years ago. – Today, Maori make up over 14 percent of the population. Their language and culture has a major impact on all facets of New Zealand life.

4 A Globalizing Phenomenon: The Haka An example of spatial diffusion and globalization, the Haka is a highly emotional and physical dance traditionally performed by the Maori people of New Zealand to motivate warriors and intimidate opponents before entering battle. This is an example how indigenous culture in Oceania is being revived and celebrated. The fact that the dance is being performed before rugby games shows how deeply globalization has hit the region. The Haka has spread quickly to other sports and places, some far beyond the South Pacific – The University of Hawaii – BYU – Several college football teams in Mexico – The Trinity Trojans in Euless,Texas
