2 Important Historical Events/Dates In 534 B.C., Thespis broke away from the Chorus, and was the first person to use dialogue on stage. In 400 B.C., the Greek Theatre allowed women in the audience.

3 Locations  The sanctuary of Asclepios is one of the few theatres that retains its original circular “Orchestra.”

4 Famous Authors Famous authors include Aeschylus, Euripides, Sophocles, Aristophanes and Homer Aeschylus was born in 525 B.C. and died in 456 B.C. Sophocles was born in 497 B.C. Euripides was born in 484 B.C. They both died in 406 B.C. Aristophanes was born in 448 B.C. and he died in 380 B.C. Homer was born in ____ and died in ____.

5 Theatre House/ Stage Area In 400 B.C., the Greek Theatre could seat over 15,000 people. Sometimes, people sitting in the back had a hard time hearing. The area behind the acting area was called the skene (skuh-nay). It was used as the actors’ dressing rooms The theatre was much like ours today- open. It had the stage flat and the audience tilted, and was made of stone. It could seat over 15,000.

6 Costumes and Make-Up The Greek Theatre didn’t use make-up. They used masks to show their emotions, and the masks established the character. Because of the masks, one person could play multiple personas. Men wore women’s clothing. There were no female actresses allowed
