Aircraft Configuration Update, October 2009 Steve Devereau 22 nd June 2009
2
Configuration Headlines (1) This configuration is for installation in October 2009. The configuration ideas shown have not been finalised, e.g. because some of the ideas draw upon the “Philosophy Change” document currently with BAE Systems. The fit is designed to cover both “chemistry” and “cloud physics” configurations. The proposed aircraft configuration is designed to cover the CIMS and RONOCO chemistry experiments, plus be the basis for all other flying up to at least October 2010
3
Configuration Headlines (2) Three new racks are included for chemistry: BBCEAS Spectrometer, CIMS and LIF. One instrument upgrade has been included for “physics”: the INC will be upgraded to a two rack instrument. Two/three other racks will be upgraded – Cloud Physics, Core Chemistry and possibly JIF. To fit the required instruments, something has to be sacrificed: the UEA NOxy is removed.
4
Configuration Headlines (3) An attempt has been made to keep racks in the same position for both “cloud physics” and “chemistry” fits. For example, the Neph rack, AMS, JIF, Nitrate and CCN racks remain unmoved across the two configuration themes. This saves money. There are a number of options available to rack positions in the cabin, which are very similar to those seen in the current MCCM (Mission Configuration Control Manual, which specifies the instrument positions on the aircraft) version. Complete removal of racks is of course also optional. Some seat options are included.
5
Configuration Headlines (4) Some positional changes: PTRMS, Core Chemistry, Core Chemistry seats. Part of FAGE has had to be moved. It has not been possible to fit even more instrument racks into the front of the cabin (due to the lack of space, the cabin-floor loading and the positioning of safety equipment, such as the oxygen mask drop-down points), but I have included a lot of options, so that the PI can decide whether Peroxide takes precedence over VACC, for example.
6
Staging Rack Upgrades It is proposed that the new MCCM version includes the new/updated racks, but all the racks may not be actually fitted to the aircraft until after the October role change. e.g. this will allow the INC to be included in the configuration even though it will not be available until early 2010. The new rack will of course go through the usual documentation/inspection process before it is fitted.
7
Off-rack changes The instruments required will be as for the current MCCM version, but there will be some changes: A turbulence probe fitted in one of the wing canisters Replacement of the NOxy inlet with an inlet for the BBCEAS instrument. Fitting a new inlet for the LIF instrument
8
Front End - 1 VACC or peroxide as per current MCCM, but 3 rd option (PERCA) added FAGE 2 moved forward slightly. INC rack 2 (new rack) option added PERCA as per current MCCM, but CIMS (new rack) option added plus option to replace either rack with a seat-pair Red dashed lines indicate current MCCM rack positions
9
Front End - 2 FAGE pumps or CVI as per current MCCM. Red dashed lines indicate current MCCM rack positions FAGE 1 as per current MCCM. INC rack 1 (new rack) option added, plus option to replace either rack with a seat-pair
10
Front End - 3 New rack position replacing a seat-pair in the current MCCM. Options for either the PTRMS or Manchester Cloud/Aerosol rack to be fitted. Red dashed lines indicate current MCCM rack positions PTRMS or Manchester Cloud/Aerosol rack as per current MCCM. Options to replace with VACC or Peroxide racks added.
11
Front End - 4 Core Chem moved back approx. 1m to position previously occupied by a seat- pair. Red dashed lines indicate current MCCM rack positions Seat-pair moved to the position of the Core Chemistry rack in the current MCCM.
12
Front End - 5 Option 1 – replace CIMS or PERCA with a seat-pair (e.g. on “physics” flights) Seat Options. Moving the Core chemistry rack removes a seat-pair (shown as dashed green) from the configuration. Three options are shown (and we want advice on whether the options are viable). Option 2 – FAGE 1 or INC with a seat-pair Option 3 – move the seat-pair to the rear of the aircraft
13
Front End - 6 Radiometers 1 as per current MCCM, but LIF rack (new rack) option added. New BBCEAS rack replaces NOxy pumps in the current MCCM.
14
Front End - 7 Neph, AMS, CCN, JIF, Nitrate and Core Console racks and seat-pair in the same positions as the current MCCM. The options to move these racks as found in the current MCCM will not be required for the new MCCM version.
15
Front End - 8 JIF rack may be updated to include over-spill from the LIF rack.
16
Same option as for current MCCM Butty-box & Banham- Hart moved rearwards All other racks & seats in their usual places Seat option: seat usually placed by Core Chem, moved here (but problem with “handed” seats?) Back End
