THE BEAT GENERATION The Beat Movement, also called the Beat Generation, was an American social and literary movement originating in the 1950s Generally apolitical and indifferent to social problems, they advocated personal release, purification, and illumination through the heightened sensory awareness that might be induced by drugs, jazz, sex, or the disciplines of Zen Buddhism. Beat poets sought to liberate poetry from academic preciosity and bring it “back to the streets.”

The Beat Movement The Beat Movement is the forerunner of : the 1960’s counterculture movement, the hippie-movement, the anti-war movement the open-society revolution.

INFLUENCE ON MUSIC The Beat Generation had a cultural and philosophical influence on rock artist.The same thematic concerns are found both in the Beat literature and rock lyrics. Musicians like Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan were influenced by the Beat Generation authors and their lyrics convey noticeable similarities with Beat literature. The connection between The Beat Generation and rock music is not coincidental. Poetry and music have always been interrelated and the Beat writers were higly aware of this. Rhytm was given a central place in their literature and they frequently connected poetry to music.

INFLUENCE ON MUSIC The creative power of these literary pioneers inspired the new open- minded generation of writers. Musician have been influenced by the Beat Generation. There are a lot of similarities between their lyrics and the Beat Literature. Jim Morrison saw the Beat Generation writers as creators of an entirely new level of consciousness. The Doors got their start in Venice Beach, California, a favorite place for the beatniks.

PARALLELS BETWEEEN POETRY AND MUSIC Recently literature studies have increasingly paid attention to the parallels between music and literature.

Poets have played a central role for social changes. Poetry gives voice to the voiceless, makes the invisible visible and names the unnameable. The language of rock songs had shaped the modern world.

The Beat Movement The Beat Movement evolved from what had initially been a group of writers with their own vision of America into a very complex literary and cultural phenomenon that influenced artists and future movements in expressing their anger and discontent with the predominant modes of thinking and living.
