Science of Rockets
2
Rockets Development - A rocket is a device expelling gas in one direction to move the rocket in the opposite direction. - Rocket technology originated from China in the 1100s.
3
Origin of Rockets The Chinese developed the first rockets – Simple arrows coated with flammable powder and shot with a bows In the 1200s, Chinese began using gunpowder In the 1800s, British improved rocketry during War of 1812 In the early 1900s, modern rockets were first developed
4
How Rockets Work An ESSENTIAL feature of a rocket is that expels (releases) gas in one direction A rocket demos Newton’s Second and Third Law of Motion – Second Law: how force, mass, and acceleration are related – **Third Law : for every action there is an equal or opposite reaction
5
Rockets and Physics Thrust is the reaction force that propels the rocket forward – Mass and speed of gases propelled affects the amount of thrust Velocity is speed in a given direction – Greater the thrust, greater the velocity of a rocket
6
Velocity Rockets must reach a certain velocity in order to go into orbit Orbital Velocity – velocity a rocket must achieve to establish an orbit around Earth Escape Velocity – velocity a rocket must reach to fly beyond a planet’s gravitational pull. – Rockets needs to leave Earth in 40,200 km per hour
