Memory (Ch.8) What was your earliest memory?

I) Processing Information The way we take in, analyze, hold, and later call upon that information. A) Schema – an outline or plan that helps us approach a problem, while drawing properly from our stored information. Ex – please write out accurate directions to the Stanley Theatre. Tests: (1) Processing Info p228 Random items…count back from 100 (2) Schema Map (see p228)

B) Special Learning Process’ 1)Elaboration – forces us to attach numerous details (associations) to aid in retrieval. Ex: Crime Scenes/CSI P230 activity 2) Mnemonics – irrational associations utilized to recall something. Ex: ROY G BIV, red key, last names, etc. Demo: Grocery Lists 3) Principle Learning – focus on main point(s) and the details will follow. A general concept for: Ex/Demo: Unit Topic: U.S.

4) Chunking – using clusters to recall and learn information. (Types of Trees; Shrubs!!!) Ex: phone #, social security, etc. Demo: “linking memories” p.234 **Despite the 4 process’ above or other events, memory is STILL Fallible.** P231 Memory Reconstruction Act. C) Other Eidetic “Photographic” Memory (25 cents) p.244 “Eyewitness” Memory – faulty by nature “Iconic and Acoustic” Memory – brief visual, musical memories

Chunking Activity: 679853415692 543113456798

II) Retaining Info: can we stop forgetting? A)The “Curve” – we will forget from time to time. Can we improve? B) Over-learning – reviewing items beyond perfection. Study, study, study! P235 Activity C) Interference – theory that conflicting bits of info. Causes us to forget more. Ex. Lost Keys D) Short/Long Term Memory: loss may occur with injury to the head. More rare than portrayed. (Amnesia)

Encoding and Storage

E) Transfer – both Positive and Negative types. (+) Flight Simulator (-) Manuel vs. Automatic Transmission Ex: Ball Tosses (OTHER?) F) Repression – of traumatic memories (violence, sexual) does occur and can be recovered, but may be recalled differently Role of emotion – short story /motorcycle G) Consolidation: theory that eventually, memories become permanent..... Or do they: Alzheimer’s Disease; Senility? ** Options – sharpness games (Sodoku, Crossword Puzzles, etc.)
