Learning Objectives By the end of this presentation participants will be able to: 1.Identify challenges to organizing an immunization promotion event with non- traditional partners. 2.Describe the process for organizing the event and securing consensus among participants. 3.Identify considerations in the production and distribution of a Video News Release.

Background Vaccine manufacturers predicted that 120 million doses would be available in the U.S. for the 2006-2007 flu campaign Need to encourage a greater percentage of the population to receive the vaccine California DHS, working with the California Adult Immunization Coalition, California Distance Learning Health Network and San Diego Immunization Branch, decided to put together an event to promote immunization against the flu for healthy adults, particularly individuals over age 50 –Create a Video News Release (VNR) –Distribute to media outlets throughout the state

Project Description The “Boomer Biker Immunization Ride” using motorcycle riders as a visual for the message that all adults, particularly those over 50, should be protected against the flu For VNR, videotape bikers riding through the countryside, then returning to the agency and receiving flu shots Comment by bikers and medical experts

Then what? “BBIZ Working Group” set up to plan and implement the project Event site selected – Biggs Harley Davidson dealership, San Marcos, California (San Diego County) Participation agreed to by North County Biggs Harley Owners Group Contract with a video production company to make the VNR

And... –Permission from the dealership to use the facility on a Saturday, the busiest day of the week –Designing an appropriate route –Setting up the immunization clinic

Communication, communication, communication... Perceptions of the project were generally different for each partner Coordination by a working group operating from different parts of California Definitely a new experience for the biker group and the dealership
