2 LBJ November 22, 1963: Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn in as the President of the United States on Air Force One after the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

3 In August 1964, Congress enacted the Economic Opportunity Act (EOA), approving nearly $1 billion for youth programs, antipoverty measures, small- business loans, and job training.

4 In 1964, the Republican Party elects conservative Arizona senator Barry Goldwater to run against President Johnson. Goldwater did not think it was the government’s job to fix social problems like poverty and discrimination.

5 Most Americans agreed with Johnson’s policies and thought that the government should help fix the nation’s problems. Johnson won 61% of the popular vote and 486 electoral votes to Goldwater’s 52. More Democrats were elected.
