1. Israel was chosen by God to enjoy a unique relationship with Him and to represent Him to the rest of the peoples of the world.

“Kingsology 101” 2. Israel was initially a theocracy until the people rejected God and demanded a king. “theos” (God) + “cracy” (rule or gov’t) theocracy = the rule or government of God

1 Samuel 8:4-5 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah 5 and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” “Kingsology 101”

Wives (women) Wealth Winnies (horses) He had 700 wives, who were princesses, and 300 concubines. (I Kings 11:3) And the king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stone. (I Kings 10:27) Solomon also had 40,000 stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen. (I Kings 4:26)

A total of 19 kings ruled; none were godly! A total of 20 kings ruled; 8 were godly. Israel Judah Only 8 of 39 (just over 20%) walked with God! Not a very good track record! (all 8 were from Judah) The Divided Kingdom Period

In antiquity, kings had absolute power. If they said you were to die (for whatever reason) … you would die. If you were to live, you would live!

Today’s Takeaway Didn’t Solomon know about the prohibitions of Deuteronomy 17 against the accumulation of wealth, wives and horses?

Deuteronomy 17:18-20 “And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests. 19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes, and doing them... that he may not turn aside from the commandment, either to the right hand or to the left, so that he may continue long in his kingdom, he and his children, in Israel.

Today’s Takeaway Didn’t Solomon know about the prohibitions of Deuteronomy 17 against the accumulation of wealth, wives and horses? YES, Solomon knew what God had said about wealth, wives, and horses. He simply CHOSE not to obey and make up his own rules!

Do you know Christ? Have you repented of your sin and believed the gospel of Jesus Christ? If you have embraced the gospel, what are you doing to keep your vision of God fresh and big? Failure to do so will lead you down the path Solomon took … a divided heart and the dire consequences that will flow from it!
