20. Vicente Ferrer (Listening-Comprehension Activity) Vicente Ferrer was born in Barcelona in 1926. As a child he lived in Barcelona and Gandía. When he was 16 years he participated in the Spanish Civil War. After the war he started to study law, with the objective of helping people. But during this period he knew La Compañía de Jesús and then he decided to join it and stopped studying at the university. In February 1952, Vicente Ferrer arrived in Mumbai (Bombay) as a Jesuit missionary. His first misión was to give spiritual help to the people, but he decided to go out to the streets and meet the people in Mumbay. After knowing the real situation of people in Mumbay, he created “El milagro de dar”. He gave money to peasants and then they gave their money back, without interest rates. He also built two schools, a hospital and two homes for students. However he was not very popular among the authorities, because he became a very beloved person among the poor people. So they decided to expell him from the country. However, India Prime Minister, Indhira Gandhi, spoke to him and she let him stay in the country after a short “vacation” abroad. Some months later, he returned to India as a hero. When he came back to India he established in Anantapur, the poorest area in India. From that moment on, he started to work for the development of that zone. In 1996 he founded the Fundación Vicente Ferrer. This organization helped poor people in Anantapur develop their resources. They created hospitals, schools, and what’s most important, they gave the poorest people in India the opportunity and the knowledge to create their own future. Vicente Ferrer died in June 2009. Now, many people are trying to make him a candidate for the Nobel Prize for peace
