In 2030 more than 2/3 of the world population will live in urban areas

City linkages offer potential for concrete outcomes Cities face similar challenges all over the world Actions will have a clear ownership EE/RES projects have good chances within CDM under the small bundling mechanism Many excellent solutions can be shared North to South but also South to South Learnings to understand, choose, utilize, adapt and replicate technology solutions are available

EE and RES priorities identified from cities Retrofitting of old buildings and building codes for new buildings Municipality policies on procurement Standards and energy efficiency labels for appliances such as heating, cooling, lighting Project finance models for cities CHP / decentralized energy supply Waste and water management Public transport

Financial Models for Energy Efficiency in Water Services across South Africa  Reduce energy costs by $3.8 million from running systems and saved 14,250 MWh of energy and 7 million kL of water annually  7 cities in South Africa  Developed tools to facilitate project funding and case studies based on the experience of the Soweto and Emfuleni municipalities  Can be replicated in any city in developing countries

Financing Energy Upgrades in South African Low- income Homes  Reduced costs of €150.000 per year through energy-upgrade of more than 1900 houses with insulated ceilings, solar water heaters and energy- efficient lighting  Kuyasa district of Cape Town  Development of a background analysis of the needs in low-income housing and of a financial model under CDM  Can be replicated in any low-income suburban area in Sub-Saharan Africa

REEEP Twinning City Initiative Link with existing municipality networks such as ICLEI, MUNEE, CITEE Contribute the REEEP expertise on renewables and energy efficiency Develop solutions for replication of REEEP projects Facilitate contact with the international finance community and ensure the link to CDM Cooperate with IEA NEET Initiative to support technology transfer
