Introduction

Introduction Improvements in the treatment of acromegaly have resulted in more patients attaining biochemical disease control, with a resultant reduction in morbidity and mortality. The often espoused goals of treatment include normalization of biochemical markers of disease activity, relief of symptoms, and control of tumour size without damaging the optic chiasm and other peripituitary structures, while preserving pituitary function.

Introduction Until recently disease-generated tools to assess QOL in patients with acromegaly have not been available. AcroQol is a QOL questionnaire, which has been designed specifically for use in patients with acromegaly. Report the relationship between treatment-induced change in IGF-I and QOL measured by AcroQol in 56 of the 80 previously investigated patients.

AcroQol comprises 22 questions divided into two main categories: physical and psychological function. Psychological general wellbeing (PGWB) index 22 items addressing both positive and negative affective states. The items are divided into six subsets: anxiety, depressed mood, positive wellbeing, self-control, general health and vitality. Signs and symptoms score (SSS) SSS is a disease-specific tool consisting of five questions scoring 0–8 and evaluating symptoms including headache, perspiration, joint pain, fatigue and soft tissue swelling. EuroQol (EQ-5D) EuroQol is a non-specific tool designed specifically to complement other QOL instruments and generate a general index of health, rather than to assess QOL itself.

Conclusion In conclusion this study reports the re-evaluation of 56 patients using the disease-generated questionnaire AcroQol, showing it to be a good measure of QOL in acromegaly. Significant correlations were demonstrated between change in IGF-I levels and AcroQol scores, an important finding given that achieving biochemical remission in acromegaly is ever more attainable with the development of better treatments.
