An average human body are made up of 200+ different cell types These vary greatly in size, shape and function All are derived from one single cell type: stem cell For simplicity, we will categorize these cells base on their functions Anatomy: The study of the parts (eg. cells, tissues, organs, systems) of an organism Physiology: The study of the functions of the parts of an organism
4
fibroblastserythrocytes a) connect body part b) cover and line body organs epithelial cells c) move organs and body parts muscle cells d) store nutrients fat cells f) gather info & control body functions nerve cells e) fight disease macrophage g) involve in reproduction sperm
6
Esophagus liningBladder lining
7
Tissues are made up of ________ ________ There are four (4) different types of tissue muscle epithelia nervous connective bone loose connective blood cartilage
8
Epithelial membrane is a covering organ for many organs There are four (4) different types of epithelial membrane we will only discuss two (2) of them Cutaneous membrane (skin) Mucous membrane
9
Protect us from: germs and cold drying out of body’s vital fluid mechanical injuries of our soft tissues Regulate body’s temperature : evaporate perspiration contract or relax the superficial blood vessels Act as organ of sense: it has nerve endings Act as biological gate: it can absorb and eliminate certain substances Has the fastest renewal rate!
10
covers body cavities that open to the outside epithelia consist of: stratified squamous simple columnar cells is wet because of continuous exposure to secretions not all mucosae secrete mucus (eg. cells that line the urinary tract)
