4. Skills For Expression A. Grammar: The Simple Past 1. Use the simple past tense to talk about actions completed in the past. Example: People called Lindbergh “The flying Fool.”

5. 2. To form the past tense: Past Tense Verbs Regular verbs: add –ed to the base form live lived returnreturned Irregular verbs: - be was/were - have had - take took

Spelling rules: For regular verbs, add -ed to the base form. land = landed If the base form ends in e, add only -d If the base form ends in consonant followed by the letter y, change y to i then add –ed. If the base form ends with consonant-vowel-consonant, double the last consonant, then add –ed. receive = received marry= married stop= stopped

7. To make negative statements, use Subject + did not + the base form: (s) + (N) + (BF) Lindbergh didn’t have a radio with him.

8. To ask wh-questions, use: wh- word + did + subject + base form What did Lindbergh have with him?

9. Note: If you do not know the subject of the question, do not use did. subject Who kidnapped the Lindbergh’s baby? To ask yes/no questions, use: Did + subject + base form Did Lindbergh’s win Orteig’s contest?

11. B. Style: Time Order When you tell a story, it is important to put the events in a clear order so your reader can understand easily. Use these words to help with time order: First, Then, Next, Later, Finally, These time words usually come at the beginning of sentence.
