1 Bell Work-Tuesday, January 20th Performance Objective: “I can explain the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and important Supreme Court Cases”. Daily Objective: Today I will finish typing my essay and email it to Mr. Tripp. 1. What is a thesis statement?

3 Attaching a file Save your document. – Click the Microsoft button in the top left corner – Click Save As – Select the folder where you want to save it – Note: If there is not a folder where you want to save it, right click in a blank space and click new and then folder

4 Attaching a file Name your document and click save Now go to your email – Enter the address that you are sending it to – Click the paper clip or the attach files button – Click browse and then choose from my computer, my documents, click on your folder and then click on your document and click attach

6 A New Country The first laws of this country came from a document called The Articles of Confederation The Declaration of Independence is not a document that stated our laws; rather, it was to declare that we considered ourselves (the colonies) independent from England

7 Bill of Rights The Constitution, it was soon to be discovered, did not include any rights for individuals, so there were amendments added. The first 10 amendments we call the Bill of Rights – These clearly point out what rights individuals have and what the government can and cannot do

8 Our Presidents The first president of the United States of America is George Washington – Washington served as commander of the Am. Rev. – Washington ran for just two terms (a president’s term is for four years) – Washington served as president from 1789–1797

9 Our Presidents The second president of the United States of America is John Adams – Adams is a founding father, but was too old for combat during the Am. Rev. – Adams was the first vice president of the United States – Adams served as president from 1797–1801

10 Our Presidents The third president of the United States of America is Thomas Jefferson – Jefferson is a founding father, but did not participate in combat during the Am. Rev. – Jefferson was the first president of the United States to defeat an incumbent president – Jefferson served as president from 1801-1809 – Oh yea, that guy!!! Remember, he was the one who authored the Declaration of Independence

11 Our Presidents The fourth president of the United States of America is James Madison-1809-1817 – President during the War of 1812 The fifth president of the United States of America is James Monroe-1817-1825 – Gives us the Monroe Doctrine John Quincy Adams-1825-1829 – First father son presidency: John Adams-John Q. Adams

12 Our Presidents The seventh president of the United States of America is Andrew Jackson 1829-1837 – Indian Removal Act, much to do with currency The eighth president of the United States of America is Martin Van Buren 1837-1841 The ninth president William Henry Harrison-1841 – Harrison holds the record for the shortest term in office at just 31 days and the first president to die while being president

13 Our Presidents The tenth president of the United States of America is John Tyler 1841-1845 – First vice president to assume the presidency The eleventh president of the United States of America is James K. Polk 1845-1849 The twelfth president Zachary Taylor 1849- 1850 – Died of sickness in office, but the first president willing to go to self-war over slavery

14 Our Presidents The thirteenth president of the United States of America is Millard Fillmore 1850-1853 – Second vice president to assume the presidency The fourteenth president of the United States of America is Franklin Pierce 1853-1857 The fifteenth president James Buchanan 1857- 1861 The sixteenth president Abraham Lincoln 1861-1865

15 Interesting Events 1800-the second U.S. census (a census is taken every ten years) – 5.3 million Americans – 1 million are black-900,000 are slaves 1801-Tripoli declares war on U.S.; Jefferson sends naval ships to Mediterranean Sea What, really? Oh yea, that just happened!!!

17 Tripolitan War The First Barbary War (1801–1805), also known as the Tripolitan War or the Barbary Coast War The first of two wars fought between the United States and the Northwest African Berber Muslim states known collectively as the Barbary States.two warsBerberMuslimBarbary States The war was fought because U.S. President Thomas Jefferson refused to pay the high tributes demanded by the Barbary states and because they were seizing American merchant ships and enslaving the crews for high ransoms. 20 Interesting Events 1805 – Lewis and Clark expedition reaches the Pacific Ocean. – Barbary War with Tripoli ends after U.S. troops capture Darna. 1806 – Lewis and Clark expedition ends with successful return to St. Louis. – Zebulon Pike discovers mountain later known as Pike’s Peak (CO). – N. Webster publishes Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. 1807 – Importation of African slaves is banned by Congress.

21 Interesting Events 1810 THIRD CENSUS: – U.S. population totals 7.2 million, including 1.4 million African Americans, of whom 1.2 million are enslaved. – Population west of Appalachian Mountains is 1 million.

22 War of 1812 WAR OF 1812 begins as U.S. declares war on Great Britain over issues of borders, trade, freedom of the seas, and the rights of neutrals. Indians under Tecumseh fight on British side Did you know??? – Did you know that the Star Spangled Banner, written by Francis Scott Keys, comes from the War of 1812 – Did you know that the war lasted until 1815?
