What Is Hydroponics?
2
Why Hydroponics? Fun It’s just cool to grow food in your home, especially when there’s snow outside. Health You control the variety, chemical inputs and time of harvest Security Allows us, as a community, to build a stronger food network that not only benefits from harvestable food, but also strengthens community development through innovation. Hydroponics: noun growing plants without soil.
3
Disadvantages No Soil Buffering = More “Fragile” System Some pathogens are more likely to occur Can quickly become complex due to tailoring systems to plant preferences
4
Advantages No Soil Is Needed Low Water Consumption + Recycling No nutrient release into environment Consistent and High Yields Tighter control over nutrients = less needed
5
Advantages Container Mobility makes Pest/Disease Remediation easier Easy to Harvest Flexible Location and Operation + easily scalable No Pesticide Damage Healthier plants in non- competitive environment
6
Salient Aspects of Hydroponics COMMON ASPECTS OF HYDROPONICS TECHNIQUES Growth Medium Presence and Type Irrigation Methods of Delivery Structures Keeping things where they belong Lights Intensity, Type, Color, Timing Energy Powering the site assets Water Moving and Using H2O Pest & Disease Control Human Work & Madness
7
Related Confusion Aquaponics Hydroponics + Aquaculture Organic Gardening A Values-Driven Approach Vertical Gardening A Design-driven approach Hydroponics can be organic! Hydroponics can be vertical!
