1 The Ultimate Coronary Care Unit in the Community Early Heart Attack Care Hands Only CPR Heart Safe Community Early Heart Attack Care Hands Only CPR Heart Safe Community

2 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 Coronary Care Units in hospitals began in the 1960s and were initially considered the best way to treat patients with Heart Attacks. Unfortunately such units were placed on upper floors of the hospital and one had to get there before quality coronary care was carried out. Coronary Care Units

3 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 Heart Attack Care in the Emergency Department was often variable and depended on the hospital where you were being treated. Chest pain centers in the ERs began in the early 1980s as a way of delivering coronary care when patients first arrived in the hospital’s emergency department. Coronary Care Units

4 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 Time became recognized as being very important in patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction. “Time is Muscle.” The more time that is lost, the more the heart damage and less the function of the heart afterwards. It became important then to begin thinking how we could deliver coronary care in the EMS ambulances and in the community. Time is Muscle

5 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 The American Medical Association and the American Heart Association made the statement in a 1980 Journal of American Medical Association article that the “ultimate coronary care unit” lies in the community. The question is “How best to setup this Ultimate Coronary Care Unit in the community?” Time is Muscle

MEDICAL FAILURE.” William Kannel, MD, Professor of Medicine and Public Health at Boston University. EARLY CARE Begins with Recognition EHAC We are barking up the wrong tree if we want to reduce Heart Attacks Deaths

8 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 Why is this necessary? Because heart attack mortality is the number one killer of the adult population in the United States and has been in first place for over 150 years. 800,000 Americans die each year from heart attacks. Heart attacks begin, fester and erupt in the community leading to crashing chest pain symptoms that then becomes an emergency and the need is there to rapidly get to the nearest emergency room to reopen the coronary vessel that has been closed. They Happen In the Community

10 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 Early Heart Attack Care (EHAC) has been the mission of the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care from the very beginning. It is centered around the medical information that “Heart Attacks have beginning symptoms.” Since these beginnings occur in 50% of patients with heart attacks, the Society places great emphasis on perfecting this Early Heart Attack Care strategy as a way to significantly reduce heart attack mortality. The impact here is the greatest! Early Heart Attack Care

11 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 The number of EHAC Deputies now stands at 400,000+ and is expected to reach one million within the next year or so. By increasing this number and placing these Deputies in the presence of an individual experiencing early symptoms of a heart attack is the way that the Society envisions seeing a reduction in heart attack mortality in the United States. Where are we today with the message?

12 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 EHAC Deputies not only act to get patients in sooner but help in wearing their badges and helping to spread the message that “Heart Attacks have beginnings.” Teaching others is an important Strategy that the Society hopes will one day change the Culture of America to intervene early when a Heart Attack is beginning to take place. “The Power of an Idea whose Time has come.” Where are we today with the message?

13 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 In order to accomplish our mission, we are asking you to become more involved in sharing the life-saving EHAC message between the hospital and the community: 1.Spread the message throughout the community that heart attacks are like other diseases - they have beginnings and early detection will save a life. Spread the Message

14 PROPERTY OF THE SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR PATIENT CARE COPYRIGHT ©2014 We Know This Works! Spreading the word encourages bystanders to participate to save a life!
