This is why Babe Ruth League, Inc. emphasizes the importance of your league recruiting the most qualified adults to serve as managers, coaches, board members, and in any other volunteer position, to ensure our participants are able to enjoy a fun and educational experience in a safe environment. As a reminder, all leagues are required to conduct nationwide background checks on all managers, coaches, board members, as well as any other persons and volunteers, who provide regular service to the league, and/or have repetitive access to, or contact with, players or teams. This nationwide search must contain the applicable government sex offender registry data. A check conducted only in one state will not meet the minimum requirements of these regulations. This nationwide search must contain the applicable government sex offender registry data. A check conducted only in one state will not meet the minimum requirements of these regulations. A background check will be valid for a three-year period for any volunteer who successfully passes a nationwide background check. For example, a volunteer who already successfully passed a background check in 2015 will not be due for another background check until the 2018 season as their background check is valid through the 2017 season. To meet the minimum standard, the local league can access the free site of the U.S. Department of Justice at www.nsopr.gov. Keep in mind that searches done on the Department of Justice National Sex Offender Public Registry do not use a birth date or Social Security Number as one of its search criteria. Therefore, any person with the same first and last name who is on the 50 states' individual state sex offender registry will show up in the search. When positive results are returned in these states with name-only searches through the sex offender registry search, the local league would be required to perform more in-depth research to determine whether the results belong to the volunteer.
