AN INTRODUCTION STANDARDS 101: ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA) ORIGIN & STRUCTURE

ELA 2010 Minnesota ELA Standards Common Core ELA Standards College and Career Readiness Strand Anchor Standard Benchmark Literacy in the Content Areas Common Language: Standards Vocabulary 3

Where do I find the Standards? http://education.state.mn.us/MDE/EdExc/StanCurri/K- 12AcademicStandards/index.htm

Minnesota and the Common Core

Development of Common Core Standards Joint initiative of: –Council of Chief State School Officers –National Governor’s Association

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) What are the products of the Common Core State Standards in ELA? –A K-12 standards document –Appendix A: supporting research and a glossary –Appendix B: text exemplars and sample performance tasks –Appendix C: samples of student writing. What aren’t the Common Core Standards? –National consortia assessments (PARCC or Smarter Balanced) –A national curriculum –A set of national procedures

Minnesota-Specific Standards Language Minnesota’s Standards Committee added additional content beyond the Common Core State Standards Some of the additions include: –Contributions of Minnesota American Indian tribes and communities –Creative writing –Media literacy –Clarifying examples

Structure of the MN ELA Standards

Sections The standards are published in three sections: K-5: ELA, History/SS, Sci., Tech. Subjects 6-12: ELA 6-12: History/SS, Science, Tech. Subjects education.state.mn.us 10

Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects = 30 Standards education.state.mn.us 11

Technical subjects are defined in Appendix A of the CCSS standards: A course devoted to a practical study, such as engineering, technology, design, business, or other workforce-related subject; a technical aspect of a wider field of study, such as art or music. A Technical Subject is… education.state.mn.us 12

Some benchmarks cover grade bands instead of individual grades: K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5: –ELA, History/SS, Sci., Tech. Subjects 6, 7, 8, 9-10, 11-12 : –ELA 6-8, 9-10, 11-12 : –History/SS, Science, Tech. Subjects Grade Bands education.state.mn.us 13

Strands The standards are organized into four strands: ● Reading● Writing ● Speaking, Viewing, ● Language Listening, & Media Literacy education.state.mn.us 14

College and Career Readiness The standards document was backwards designed from a set of College and Career Ready (CCR) anchor standards. Learning progressions are “anchored” in the CCR standards. The steps of those progressions at each grade level are known as benchmarks. education.state.mn.us 15

College and Career Readiness is… “Career and college ready” means a high school graduate has the knowledge, skills, and competencies to successfully pursue a career pathway, including postsecondary credit leading to a degree, diploma, certificate, or industry-recognized credential and employment….without need for remediation. (Source: 2014 MN Session Laws, Chapter 272 – House File 2397, Section 8) education.state.mn.us 16

Examining Benchmarks Most College and Career Ready Anchor Standards have one corresponding benchmark at each grade level in ELA. You can analyze benchmarks “vertically” to see how expectations increase from grade to grade. (“learning progressions”)

Vertical Alignment of Standards Informational Text: Key Ideas and Details Anchor Standard 1: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. GradeGrade-Specific Benchmark KindergartenWith prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text. Grade 1Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. Grade 2 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. Grade 3 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers. Grade 4 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Grade 5 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Grade 6 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Grade 7 Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Grade 8 Cite the textual evidence that most strongly supports an analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Grades 9-10 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Grades 11-12 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
