Announcements 1.Re-Emphasis of Classroom Rules Cellphones Away when Class Begins. This is common sense. I shouldn’t have to tell you this Every. Single. Day. Excessive gum chewing will result in a phone call home and a disciplinary essay. Having more than 3 tardies will result in a phone call home and after school detention. Food Allowed: Water, coffee, tea. Cheetos AWAY 2.Grading & Late work Policy All late work during Semester 2 is grades 50% off in addition to incorrect / incomplete answers. Unless there is a situation beyond your control, in which case I need a note and signature of some kind as to the reason of your absence. Japan and Korea Objective: o Detail the unique physical features of the regions of Russia and research the varying aspects through analysis. o Explain why European Russia is considered the heartland of the country. o Describe the four major regions of European Russia. Essential Question: o What is the cultural history of Asia and what makes Japan significant in the region? o Explain the differences between the west vs. the east and effects of imperialism. o Explain Japan’s involvement in WWII. o Why are North and South Korea separated? o How does a region’s physical geography influence its cultural heritage? 300 B.C.E. – Rice farming is introduced; irrigation becomes important for political power. Shintoism is the first religion to develop. Buddhism and Confucianism follow from China. 700 C.E. – Feudal political system develops; samurai warriors serve lords; shoguns are named by the emperor. Japan’s Early History and Culture:

1200’s – Mongols invade and the feudal domains unite against them. 1500’s – Portuguese traders arrive followed by Spanish missionaries. Europeans are banished and Japan remains isolated until the mid-1850’s. Japan’s Early History and Culture (Cont.):

1852 – Matthew Perry’s warships sail into Tokyo Bay. 1860’s – Japan begins industrializing and modernizing. Japan expands; annexes Korea in 1910; takes over northeast China and Asian territories through the 1930’s. The Modernization of Japan:

Japan loses its power with its defeat in World War II. The United States occupies Japan until 1952, helping it rebuild and become a major industrial power. A democratic constitutional monarchy is established. The Modernization of Japan (cont.):

Major Japanese cities are busy, noisy, and very densely populated. The Tokyo megalopolis has almost 30 million people. Tokyo is the capital and center of government. Land is scarce and real estate prices are among the highest in the world. Ginza is the largest shopping district in the world. Japan Today

Yokohama is Japan’s major seaport. Osaka, Kyoto, and Kobe form another major megalopolis. Japan Today

Japan is ethnically homogenous. The culture is traditionally male dominated. Most people live in the suburbs and have long commutes to work. Land is very scarce and homes are small. Traditional arts include tea ceremonies, flower arranging, bonsai trees, and kite flying. Life in Japan

Foreign investments have influenced Japan’s industry and economy.
