3 Location Wicklow is in the Province of Leinster. It is a coastal county. Its bordering counties are Dublin, Kildare, Wexford and Carlow. The Irish for Wicklow is Cill Mhantáin, which means Toothless one! The main towns in Wicklow are Wicklow Town, Greystones, Bray and Arklow.

7 Avondale House is the birthplace and home of Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891) - one of the greatest political leaders of Irish history. -

8 Charles Stewart Parnell was a famous Irish politician who was born in 1846. He became leader of the Home Rule league in 1880. He fought to abolish landlordism He lived in Avondale House which is near Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow.

10 Glendalough

12 GLENDALOUGH Glendalough means the “valley of the two lakes” and is a glacial valley in County Wicklow. The valley was formed in the last ice age by a glacier, the Poulanass river which plunges into the valley from the south, created a delta, which eventually divided the lake into two. Glendalough is one of the most important Monastic sites in Ireland. The Monastic settlement was founded by St. Kevin in the 6 th Century. There are a large number of historic monuments in Glendalough. e.g. The Round Tower, St Kevin's Cell, St Kevin's Bed.

13 GLENDALOUGH There are many walking trails around Glendalough. Within the valley there are nine colour coded trials. The longest trial is called ' The Wicklow Way' at a distance of 127KM, Ascent 3200m, Time:7+ days to complete. Glendalough's Grantie Cliffs situated at the hill side above the north-western end of the valley, has been popular for rock climbing Glendalough is a great place to find wildlife, such as goosander and the great spotted woodpeckerand mountain goats

14 Russborough House Russborough was built between 1741-1750 and is regarded as one of Ireland’s most beautiful houses. It has magnificent views of the Blessington Lakes and Wicklow Mountains It is open to visitors where they can see the fancy furniture, tapestries and collections of silver and paintings.

16 Powerscourt House and Gardens Powerscourt is one of the world’s great gardens and is located 20km south of Dublin City Centre. There are many hidden treasures to explore. With over 200 varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers this 47 acres has something for everyone.

17 Powerscourt House Powerscourt House was originally a 13 th Century Castle In 1731 the owner asked German architect Richard Cassels to change the castle into the house it is now. It took 10 years to complete the changes The house was destroyed by fire in 1974 Powerscourt Estate is owned by the Slazenger family.

19 Kilruddery House Kilruddery is a historical place in Bray. It is home to the Brabazon family ( The Earl of Meath) since 1618. Its gardens and house are open to the public from April to September. The gardens are beautiful and you can bring picnics and spend the day there. There is a farmers market every Saturday where you can buy nice foods and crafts.

21 Squirrel Scramble Squirrel Scramble is a tree adventure park which opened in 2014. There are four different areas to climb and explore You can have parties and school tours there.

23 Wicklow Gaol Wicklow Gaol was built in 1702 and closed in 1924. It was known as the gates of hell. Thousands of people were kept there. Some people were sent there for stealing cows or sheep. Lots of children were sent there too and were treated as harshly as the adults.

24 In 1845 the prisoners had milk and potatoes for breakfast and dinner, and had bread only on Sundays. During the Famine there were no potatoes, so they had meal and bread instead. Even though the food was so bad, some people were so hungry they tried to get into the gaol for the food.

25 After Wicklow Gaol closed in 1924, it was used for a little while as a storehouse. It opened as a museum in 1998.

28 The Sugarloaf The Sugarloaf is a climbable hill located between Delgany and Kilmacanogue. At the top on a clear day the mountains of Wales can be seen.

29 The Wicklow Way The Wicklow Way is a 129-kilometre long- distance trail that crosses the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland. It runs from Marlay Park in Dublin through County Wicklow and ends in the village of Clonegal in County Carlow.

30 The Wicklow Way was planned over a 40 year period by the legendary hillwalker, J B Malone. The Dublin and Wicklow range is the largest highland area in Ireland. It is Ireland’s first way-marked trail, and is one of the most popular walking trails in Ireland.

34 Sealife Aquarium Sealife Aquarium is in Bray and is great for family fun. The sealife zoo has 30 displays of sea creatures There are 100 different creatures on display, which include Black Tip Reef Sharks, Octopus, Seahorses, Stingrays and Red Bellied Piranha! The Aquarium is indoors and a perfect lace to go on a rainy day.

37 Famous Sports People Katie Taylor Paul Dunne

39 Katie Taylor is an Irish boxer. She won a gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics. She started boxing when she was 9. She lives in Bray, Co. Wicklow. She has also played soccer for Ireland. Katie is also a vey kind person and does a lot for charity.

40 Paul Dunne is an Irish professional golfer from Greystones in County Wicklow. He first came to prominence at the 2015 Open Championship where, playing as an amateur, he was tied for the lead after three rounds. Paul’s sister Ms. Dunne is also a professional, and she teaches in our school!

43 Hozier Andrew Hozier-Byrne, better known as Hozier, is an Irish musician, singer and songwriter from County Wicklow. He released his debut EP, featuring the hit single "Take Me to Church", in 2013 and his second EP, From Eden, in 2014. He lives in Bray.

47 The Happy Pear is a café and natural food store in Greystones, which was set up by twin brothers Stephen and David Flynn. They also have a farm in Kilcoole. They have written two cook books. They can be seen on the Supervalu adds and the Jamie Oliver youtube channel.
