UDL Implementation: Systems Lens The scientific implementation process recognizes that systems are complex. Context matters and the identified needs of all stakeholders directly impact the implementation process. Even if initiatives have been demonstrated to be effective in the research, if they are not implemented and supported by an integrated and sustainable plan, they are likely to fail (Fixsen, Naoom, Blase’, Friedman, & Wallace, 2005).

Professionalization of Teaching Staff Research suggests that in order to have any impact on student achievement, staff must receive a minimum of 14 hours of study in the same professional development focus area (Hill & Wellesley College, 2012). Teachers who receive substantial professional development (intensive, sustained and strongly implemented)—an average of 49 hours a year— can boost their students’ achievement by about 21 percentile points (Chung Wei, Darling-Hammond, & Adamson, 2010).

Firm Goals, Flexible Means Knowledge: We all have knowledge, and concepts that we want our students to acquire. What is that knowledge and why is it important? Skills: There are specific skills students will have to complete to be successful. What are these competencies and why are they important?

Where Do You Start? With UDL! Building engagement is all about building an environment that values feedback, collaboration and community. Consider the environment of your institution and begin to consider how you would build an integrated plan based on the foundation of stakeholder feedback, collected using multiple means of expression. Feedback Principles Receiving feedback well is a skill. However skilled we are at it now, with some thought and application, we can get better Leaders who receive feedback well provide an invaluable model for others and create a culture where feedback is valued. One of the best ways to improve our ability to give feedback well is by improving our understanding of what it takes to receive feedback well.
15
Action Plan – Executive Function Deep Dive How can UDL support continued improvement and inclusive practice in your institution by leveraging the UDL Implementation Process? As a first step, collect data to understand the culture and the current needs of all stakeholders using multiple means of action and expression? What is your goal and what is the first step you will take?

Closing: Speed Reflecting You can virtually chat on Twitter, LinkedIn,etc… or in person. Choose one question for your final reflection. 1.What you would like your retirement speech to say about your career accomplishments and the types of impacts you left at your institution? 2.If absolutely no obstacles stood in the way of your achieving UDLtopia, what would you most like to attain in your career? 3.Imagine yourself in the future at a point in which your instituition has achieved UDL nirvana. What is it that you have accomplished?
