Rules: Pick one of the questions to do in each problem set (1 question per team member). Once you finish your question, pass back your paper to your teammate. If you are the last person in your row, check the work of the people in front of you. When you are finished, run your paper back up to the front!!

Round 1: Vocabulary *** Pick 1 question/person Answer the following questions: 1. A solution is made by dissolving some salt in a beaker of water. The salt is referred to as the _______________. 2. The __________ is the substance the does the dissolving. 3. A _______________ is a mixture that can be separated using filtration. 4. Milk is an example of a ____________.
4
Round 2: Concentration* ** 1 question/person 1. What is the molarity of a solution that is made by mixing 90.5 grams of calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) in 1250 mL of solution? 2. How many grams are needed of ethanol (C 2 H 5 OH) are needed to make 256 grams of a 23.2% solution? 3. What will the volume of a 0.625M solution be if it contains 4.58 grams of sodium hydroxide (NaOH)? 4. What is the number of kilograms of solvent in a 0.70 molal solution containing 5.0 grams of solute? (molar mass of solute = 30 g)
5
Round 3: Solubility* ** 1 question/person 1. What is the solubility of potassium nitrate at 70°C? 2. What is the maximum amount of KCl that can dissolve in 200 g of water at 50°C ? 3. If 75 grams of sodium chloride is dissolved in 100 g of water at 20°C, will the solution be saturated, unsaturated or supersaturated? 4. If 50 grams of ammonium chloride is added 155 grams of water at 90°C, will the solution be saturated, unsaturated or supersaturated?
6
Round 4 – More Solubility and Concentration * ** 1 question/person 1. Calculate the mass percent of a saturated solution of sodium nitrate at 25°C. 2. What happens to the solubility of gases as the temperature increases? 3. What is the molality of a saturated solution of potassium iodide at 10°C? 4. What happens to the solubility of gases as the pressure decreases?
7
Round 5: Colligative Properites/Dilution *** Pick 1 question/person 1. What is the Van’t Hoff Factor (i) for C 2 H 5 OH? 2. What is the boiling point of a solution containing 14.5 g of SrCl 2 in 225 g of water ? The molal boiling point constant of water is 0.52°C/m. 3. Rank the following 0.50 molal aqueous solutions in order of lowest to highest freezing point. NaCl (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 Al 2 O 3 4. If 1.0 mL of 6.0M HCl is added to 499 mL of water to give exactly a 500-mL solution, what is the molarity of the dilute solution?
