CAN bus Network Introduced in 1980s by Intel and Bosch First appeared in 1990s series BMW and Mercedes Benz vehicles Module to module communication Required when emissions regulations became stricter

Powertrain Control Module Monitors things related to engine performance Broadcasts status of sensors over the network Useful in NYS emissions inspections Scanners can be connected and act as another node in system to access the data on the network

Body Control Module Controls functions pertaining to the vehicle body Power windows and locks, anti-theft, lights, etc. Utilizes priority bits broadcast on network

SRS Module Responsible for deploying airbags in the event of a collision Uses sensors all over the car and info from different modules to determine the necessity for airbag deployment Processes signals to go from first input to fully inflated airbag in 20-30 milliseconds

Benefits of CAN Reduces redundant wiring Allows for ease of adding components Programming complexity vs. Physical complexity Will allow for more sophisticated vehicles in the future
