2 A story of a historical event. The people and the places are true, but it is written as a story.

3 Biographies and autobiographies are usually historical narratives.

4 Historical fiction would also fit in this genre.

5 Can be firsthand accounts written by people who lived through the events, or… Secondhand accounts by people who research the events later.

6 They may include analysis and explanation, in addition to facts.

7 Firsthand accounts may be inaccurate (like Columbus) but they capture the flavor of the time in which it was written.

8 1590-1657 Born in England Joined the Puritans who wanted to separate from the Church of England.

9 The Puritans faced stiff persecution so they fled to North America;

10 In Of Plymouth Plantation, Bradford provides an account of this experience.

12 A small band of English people who came here in 1620 on the Mayflower and settled in Plymouth. Emphasis was on a new political and spiritual identity.

13 Former President George Bush is a direct descendant of the Mayflower.

14 A group of English Protestants who in the 16 th and 17 th centuries advocated strict religious discipline.

15 They wanted to purify their church. Came to America 10 years after the Pilgrims.

16 Wanted to remain part of the English establishment, working for biblical reform within. Saw the main purpose of their new colony as being that of a biblical witness.

17 Began writing OPP in 1603; Written in the Puritan Plain Style.

18 An account of the Puritans’ struggle to endure, sustained by courage and faith.

19 OPP was not published until 1856; Bradford was reelected governor 30 times!!!
