2. I. Calvin and Calvinism 1. John Calvin’s ideas became the basis for many new Protestant churches. 2. He believed in predestination, that God has already decided in advance who will go to heaven. 3. Calvinists believed the congregation (churchgoers) should choose their leaders. 8. II. The English Reformation 1. King Henry VIII wanted his marriage to Catherine of Aragon (of Catholic Spain) annulled and the pope refused. Henry annulled it anyway and was excommunicated. He passed the Act of Supremacy and created a separate Church of England, or the Anglican Church. *Why did King Henry create the Anglican Church?

9. III. Who Was Bloody Mary? 2. Queen Mary wanted to make England Catholic again. She killed hundreds of Protestants. 3. Elizabeth I was crowned Queen of England after Mary. She restored Protestantism. She is considered one of the greatest monarchs in English history. 4. Puritans wanted to purify the Anglican Church of their Catholic practices.
