2. Carthaginians Carthaginians – the people of Carthage Phoenicians – middle eastern people Punic Wars – Rome’s involvement in conquering Sicily, lasted for more than a century, wanted control of North Africa and Spain. Rome won the first of the Punic Wars and took over Sicily

3. Hannibal and Scipio Hamilcar Barca expanded Carthage to the west and took over Spain Hannibal = Hamilcar’s son, wanted to take over Rome, began this goal at the age of 26. Second Punic War = Rome and Saguntum Hannibal then attacked Rome by land

4. The Third Punic War “Carthage must be destroyed.” Carthage asked for peace and surrendered their weapons, but Rome did not accept the peace offering. The Roman army conquered Carthage.

5. The Wars – simplified! Punic War #1 = Rome vs. Carthaginians, Rome won and conquered Sicily Punic War #2 = The Romans object to Hannibal’s attack on Saguntum. Lasted 218 to 201 B.C. Punic War 3# = Carthage wanted to surrender but Rome did not. Rome ended up conquering the city of Carthage.

7. ACTIVITY! Hannibals Route Map! We will be labeling a map with Hannibal’s Route and the bodies of water that surround his route. We will also label the mountain ranges and countries in which Hannibal and his troops came into contact with.
