Rome overthrew the Etruscans and created a republic (elected officials govern the state) Rome created a government called a Senate. Patricians –The Rich families that mostly controlled society. Plebeians- The common people Plebeians had representation called Tribunes Patricians Plebeians

The Senate 300 Members Advised elected officials Controlled foreign policy Controlled public finances Popular assemblies Citizens voted and elected officials Consuls Put the laws into practice in the name of the senate. Two consuls became the head of the government and commander of the army

First Punic War- 264 BC – Roman Victory, fought mostly at sea Second Punic War- 218BC – Hannibal (Carthaginian General) led an army (and war elephants!) across the alps and attack Rome. Third Punic War- Rome retaliated and destroyed Carthage.
