Lab Guide This guide will help you to meet the basic skill in order to complete Lab 1 successfully.

Lab Equipment the day (1) Erlenmeyer flask

Lab Equipment for the day (1) Meter rule

Hypothesis- a statement that predicts an intelligent outcome of the experiment. e.g During the springtime Miguel father bought a pack of grass seeds to plant in their backyard. The guy at the store told him that if he buys some nitrogen fertilizer then the grass will grow faster. Miguel’s father was a both skeptical and was not sure if the guy really was giving him good advice or he wanted to make more money. As a scientist student create a hypothesis to test the store owner claim. If nitrogen is given to the grass then the grass will grow taller. Question Checklist for correct hypothesis (1) Is it in a statement form? (2) Think what you know about the subject matter and is it an intelligent cause? (3) Does the cause have a measurable effect?

You try one Every day when I feed my bird, I notice that the food container at the bottom of the cage is always left untouched. On the other hand, the food container attached to the top side of the cage next to his perch is always empty. Write a hypothesis. “Remember to give a solution and how you would measure if it worked or not?” Here is a sentence starter If I _______________________then____________________________. Question Checklist for correct hypothesis (1) Is it in a statement form? (2) Think what you know about the subject matter and is it an intelligent cause? (3) Does the cause have a measurable effect?

Control Group and Controlled Variable- a control group is set up with the experimental group to compare the results. Miguel use two separate location in his backyard and to one side he added nitrogen and the other side no nitrogen. The side with no nitrogen is called his control group. He did that to compare his results and see if the nitrogen was really working. But Miguel had to have control variables so that his experiment was reliable so he uses the same species of grass, the same amount of water, the same type of soil and even ensured that the same amount of sunlight was reaching both plot of grass.

You Try one Every day when I feed my bird, I notice that the food container at the bottom of the cage is always left untouched. On the other hand, the food container attached to the top side of the cage next to his perch is always empty. From the hypothesis you wrote before. (1)Identify how the control group would be different from the experimental group. (2)What are some control variables in both experiment?

Independent and Dependent Variable Independent variable is what am I testing? Dependent Variable is what am I measuring or counting to see if my experiment worked. In Miguel's case his Independent variable is: Nitrogen Dependent Variable is: Height of grass

You Try one Every day when I feed my bird, I notice that the food container at the bottom of the cage is always left untouched. On the other hand, the food container attached to the top side of the cage next to his perch is always empty. From the hypothesis you wrote before. What is the independent and dependent variable?

Explanation using a DSET template A Scientific explanation contains 3 section that comes after you looked at your results Claim- What is your result claiming about the experiment Evidence- what evidence support the claim Reasoning- what scientific knowledge or concept explains or support the evidence. ClaimEvidenceReasoning Nitrogen increases the height of grass. From the experiment, after the first week, the grass without nitrogen grew 5 inches and the grass with nitrogen grew 10 inches Science Concept Nitrogen is a fertilizer that helps with plant growth. NitrogenNo Nitrogen Height of Grass10 inches5 inches

Scientific Explanation When Nitrogen is added to grass they grow taller. From the experiment grass without nitrogen grew 5 inches after the first week whereas grass with nitrogen grew 10 inches. Nitrogen is known as a fertilizer that farmers use to add nutrients to plants. Since grass is a plant then it had the same effect. Nitrogen helps to elongate the tips of roots and shoots in plants hence the difference in growth of 5 inches.
