Beach Ball –In small groups, pass the beach ball to each other. –When you catch the beach ball, answer the question that is closest to your left thumb.
4
Group Norms All ideas will be listened to carefully and responded to respectfully Everyone will have a voice All questions and comments will be presented with the intent to move the collective forward Clarifying questions are welcome Everyone will engage fully in the moment

Session Goals Explore the Big Ideas of Proportional Reasoning Make connections between course expectations to the Big Ideas of Proportional Reasoning Practice matching problems involving proportional reasoning to the Big Ideas

Big Picture for the Week MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFriday Exploring Big Ideas for Proportional Reasoning Connecting them to the curriculum Developing good consolidation questions Writing learning goals connected to Big Ideas and curriculum Developing parallel questions, corresponding common questions and scaffolding questions Focused conversations with critical friends Developing open questions and corresponding scaffolding questions Focused conversations with critical friends Carousel to share our work and explore other groups
7
Where is proportional reasoning? Take 2 minutes and jot down where you think proportional reasoning lies in the grade 11 and 12 curriculum On your own Share your ideas With a partner Walk around the room and record, on the chart paper, what ideas around proportional reasoning are in each course Whole Group Graffiti
8
Let’s do some math…. Select one of the problems on the page and complete it. Once you have completed the problem consider: –In what ways did you, or could you have, used proportional reasoning when solving the problem –What big idea(s) might be addressed with the problem you chose?
9
Standing conversations…. Find someone in the room who completed the same problem as you. Have a conversation about what proportional reasoning was involved and which big idea(s) you think the problem might connect to.
10
Matching Expectations to Big Ideas Choose one of the sets of expectations that you are familiar with Work as a team to determine which Big Idea each expectation connects to (try to narrow it down to one) Place each expectation on the chart paper with the Big Idea you connected it to MEL 3E MBF 3C MEL 4E MAP 4C MCT 4C MHF 4U MCV 4U MDM 4U MCR 3U MCF 3M
11
Gallery Walk Take a few minutes to walk around and look at the expectations under each Big Idea and consider whether you agree or disagree with their placement.
12
Thoughts… Were some Big Ideas easier to match to than others? Which ones? Do some courses seem to have more proportional reasoning than others? Which ones? Was there anything that stood out for you during this activity?
13
Inside/Outside Circle Share your response to the following with your partner. Question 1 “I think the value of focussing on the same Big Ideas in proportional reasoning from K – 12 might be that….”
14
Inside/Outside Circle Share your response to the following with your partner. Question 2 Describe any “aha” moments you had today.
15
Inside/Outside Circle Share your response to the following with your partner. Question 3 Were there any ideas presented today that challenged your thinking? If so, what?
