Municipal Solid Waste Issues Money and Environment More People = More Waste Evolving Ton Fuel Sustainability
3
More People = More Garbage Recycling more than ever Throwing away more than ever What to do? “Reduce” education Manage what we have
4
The Evolving Ton What can we pull out the garbage and where will it go?
5
The Evolving Ton Trash Recyclables Wood Grass (silage) Food Scraps (anaerobic digester) Bio-solids Other
6
Trash Density Tarps New Cells Post-Closure
7
Recycling Efficient Collection = More Tons Captured Processing Revenue
8
Wood Dropped-off at landfills and transfer stations. Ground – used as cattle bedding or composting feedstock. Spent cattle bedding is land-applied as soil amendment to help grow crops the cattle will eat.
9
Grass Recycling Grass-only recycling starting summer 2013. Grass will be ensiled (pickled) and used as cattle feed. Subscription pilot program to help address grass which makes up 90% of our green waste during the growing season.
10
Food Scraps – Anaerobic Digestion Food waste makes up a significant portion of garbage. Process: Food waste is mixed with sludge in digesters and the material decomposes. Benefit: Methane gas (used to generate electricity or as a transportation fuel
