9/8 Warm Up Review Energy Transfer 1. Which processes of energy/ heat transfers the sun’s energy between particles as well as through empty space? 2. As water or air is heated by the sun, it becomes _____ dense and ______. What causes this to happen?

Air Masses Types of Air Masses: Tropical: warm air masses in the tropics, low air pressure Polar: cold air masses in the north, high air pressure

Air Masses Types of Air Masses: Maritime: air masses that form over oceans, humid air Continental: air masses that form over land, dry air

Fronts Def: the area where two air masses meet and do not mix

Weather What causes it? Weather the condition of Earth’s atmosphere at a given time in a given place What causes weather? Short Version: the uneven heating of the Earth’s surface by the Sun

Does Air have a Mass? 1.Purpose of Experiment: – Why are we doing this? 2.Experimental Observations: – Place two equally inflated balloons on each end of the meters stick. What do you notices? 3.Prediction or Hypothesis: – Before making your prediction (or hypothesis), it helps to start with a question (or to make observations and then ask a question). – Use your prior experience with air to predict what you think will happen to the balance when one of the two balloons has its air removed. 4.Results: – What happened when air was released from one balloon?

Does Air have a Mass? 5. Conclusion a) What happened to the balance when the air came out of one of the balloons? b)Which side is heavier, the full balloon or the empty balloon? c)Was the result of the balloon balance what you expected? Look back to your hypothesis.

Write down all the Questions in notebook and then go back Answer 1.What are the types of Air Masses? 2.How are Air masses different? 3.What is Wind? 4.How is wind formed? 5.What is air pressure?

Answer on White Board Review Topics 1.What type of Front is this? 2.What type of weather occurs with this front? H Cold Air Mass Dense, High Pressure L Warm air Mass

Words Used to Describe Air Masses Where it’s formed Temperature of Air MaritimeWater; Humid Continental Land; Dry Tropical Hot Polar Cold

Air Masses Air Mass: A Large body of air that is the same temperature and humidity Humidity: The amount of water vapor in the air

On a Weather Map H= High Pressure more dense air Cooler temperatures Dry Air Happy Days – Sunny – Clear

On a Weather Map L= Low Pressure less dense air Warmer temperatures Humid Air Lousy Days – Rainy – Cloudy

Answer on White Board Review Topics 1.What type of Front is this? 2.What type of weather occurs with this front? Cold Air Mass Dense, High Pressure Warm air Mass

Wind & Convection Currents (add to back page of notes) Wind: the movement of air from an area of H (high pressure) to an area of L (low pressure)

Convection Current When warm air (moist) rises and cool air (moist) sinks H Cool air / moist L Warm air / moist

Warm up On Whiteboard as a Team: 1.List all the Layers of the Atmosphere and as many characteristics for each layer as you can. 2.How does the Sun’s Energy influence our Weather?
