LEARNING TARGETS: TODAY WE WILL: REFLECT ON OUR PERSONALITIES, INFLUENCES, I-STATEMENTS, AND HOW TO SAY NO. SO THAT WE CAN: MAKE THE RIGHT DECISION WHEN FACED WITH PEER PRESSURE OR A DIFFICULT DECISION. WE WILL KNOW WE HAVE IT WHEN: WE CAN SOLVE A COUPLE OF REAL-LIFE PROBLEMS. Lesson #23: How to Say No Effectively
2
Bellwork: Now that we’ve explored a little bit more about our personalities, let’s look at how we handle things… Part #1: Describe a time when someone tried to get you to do something that you didn’t want to do. Part #2: Share this experience with a partner and see how he/she would’ve solved it… Don’t tell them the outcome until after they tried to solve what you could’ve done. Did your “True Color” play a role in how you handled it or how your partner would’ve handled it?
3
So, what about influences too… In that situation where someone tried to get you to do something you didn’t want to do, what influences helped you make your decision? Influences: Goals Friends & family Interests Where we live Religion Media Laws/rules Role models Values Curiosity

Let’s go back… Remember way, way back in lesson #2, we talked about what an “I- statement” was? Well… I-statement: a statement that helps you honestly state your feelings, thoughts, or opinions without being disrespectful to others by blaming or putting them down. A great way to communicate your feelings with a friend.
5
I-Statement Continued… I-Statement: How you feel about what he/she did or what happened. What you would like the person to do instead and why. The impact on you because of what the person did/what happened. Simply put… I feel ____________ Please ____________ Because ___________
