Negotiating the new pay structure Key principles in Appendix A of the Framework: New grading structures to be developed, negotiated and agreed with the trade unions Must support the achievement of equal pay for work of equal value Must apply common grade boundaries across all staff groups, including where job families or career pathways are used

Negotiating the new pay structure New grading structures must link with the new national 51 point single pay spine in Appendix B of the Framework 51 point spine for all staff except clinical academics Commended national grading structure in Appendix C

Appendix C Appendix C model sets out commended five grade structure for academic staff, with contribution points at the top of each grade Five grade structure facilitates use of national academic profiles – illustrative grade descriptors given in appendix C

Commended national academic pathway Very similar to the current post 1992 structure Academic 1 – researchers only Academic 2 – Lecturer Academic 3 – Senior Lecturer Academic 4 – Principal Lecturer Academic 5 – Professor/HOD

Commended national academic pathway All grades have contribution threshold to which there is annual automatic progression All grades have contribution points beyond the contribution threshold JNCHES guidance on the development and agreement of local procedures on the criteria for the award of contribution points

Contribution points guidance Examples given for contribution points at Academic 3 and Academic 4, for teaching and learning, research and administration (not appropriate to use contribution points at Academic 2 for lecturers) Local procedures should work alongside the national academic profiles Ensure contribution points ranges not being used to prevent promotion

Hourly paid staff National guidance on hourly paid lecturers in post 1992 institutions (agreed by ASSC in absence of AUT) Role analysis to determine the appropriate salary grade for hourly paid lecturers Calculation based on 1.5 additional hours for every hour’s teaching

Alternatives to the commended model Commended grading model is flawed in many ways for pre 1992 academic staff Application of the Memorandum of Understanding in pre 1992 institutions will require changes to the commended model AUT policy is to negotiate improvements to the national commended grading structure in all institutions where we have members

The AUT preferred model The AUT preferred grading model has less increments in each academic grade It raises the top of the first lecturer grade (academic 2) to point 36 This means a higher starting salary for researchers on academic 1, for lecturers on academic 2 and for senior lecturers on academic 3 Top point of academic 3 and academic 4 remain the same

To be negotiated at local institutions Most logical application of the Framework amended by the MoU AUT policy position is harmonisation across the sector Natfhe has agreed to negotiate implementation of the commended structure or an improved variant of it Preferred new grading model
