1
Aim: How has technology & industrialization negatively impacted the environment?
2
What is Industrialization? Industrialization is the development of an economy in which machines produce many of the products people use.
3
What is Technology? The use of scientific knowledge & technical processes to meet human needs.
4
What have been the effects of Industrialization & Technology on human population? 3 They have allowed for an enormous surge in population growth. Why? These machines & technologies have been able to meet the needs of more & more people.
5
What are the effects of these advances? 4 Consume More Resources Air Pollution Thermal Pollution Solid Waste Disposal Toxic Waste Water Pollution
6
Consumption of More Resources: 5 Industrialization increases the demand for energy, water, and other resources including fossil & nuclear fuels.
7
Consumption of More Resources: 5 What are the 3 main fossil fuels: 1) Oil 2) Coal 3) Natural Gas What kind of resources are fossil fuels? Non-Renewable
8
What is Nuclear Fuel? 6 Nuclear fuel is an energy source that results from the splitting of atoms. Nuclear power plants do not pollute the air or water with toxic chemicals Problems: 1)Cause thermal pollution of waterways. 2)Difficult to safely dispose of nuclear (radioactive) wastes. Help Generate Electricity
9
Consumption of Water: 7 Most factories use a lot of water. + This can lead to serious consequences for the native plants and the consumers that depend on plants for food.
10
Types of Pollution: Water 8 Sewage, wastes from homes & factories, animal wastes from farms, & fertilizers can be disposed of in rivers, lakes, & oceans.
11
What are the effects of sewage & animal wastes in aquatic systems? 9 Eutrophication 1)Sewage & animal wastes act as fertilizer & increase the growth of aquatic producers (algae & plankton) 2) Produce a lot of oxygen but also use it, especially when they die and decay 3) Use a lot of the oxygen at night. 4) Other organisms suffocate.
12
Pollution: Toxic Wastes 10 Toxic (poisonous) wastes can cause environmental problems because when they are disposed of they can collect in the cells of organisms. Mercury is a toxin that can be found in fish
13
Biological Magnification 11 The concentration of toxic substances (DDT) as you move through the food chain (plants are eaten by herbivores, which are eaten by carnivores, etc…..) increases.
14
Pollution: Thermal (Heat) 12 Some power plants & industries use water to cool their machines. The warmed water is then released into a river or lake. The warm water cannot hold as much oxygen as cold water and some species may suffocate.
15
Pollution: Air 13 The burning of fossil fuels that were formed from the remains of organisms millions of years ago contribute to air pollution. + CO 2, SO 2, NO 2 S = Sulfur N = Nitrogen
16
Effects of Air Pollution: Acid Rain 14 Due to burning of fossil fuels SO 2, NO 2, CO 2 Rain mixes with gases in air Destruction of trees and destruction of pond ecosystems
17
Effects of Air Pollution: Smog Smog is a kind of air pollution that results when certain pollutants react with sunlight.
18
Pollution: Solid Waste A new increased demand for disposable products has led to solid waste problems.

How much trash does Hicksville produce each year? The average U.S. citizen produces 4.5 pounds of trash each day. How many pounds of trash does Hicksville produce in one year? Hicksville Population(census 2000)= 41,260 Answer = 67,769,550 pounds
