3 1. Imperialism Take-overs to build wealth because…Wealth=Power Competition-Rivalry-Conflict ….WAR

4 2. Nationalism ALL newly independent countries were trying to become WORLD POWERS Br, Fr, Ger, Rus, AH, Itl, J, US wanted “a place in the sun.”

5 3. Alliances: Open and “Secret” Trade, Political, and Military alliances were made for mutual benefit Secret alliances were made to “insulate” or “isolate” and protect colonial holdings.

6 4. Militarism and Stock-Piling Armaments Mass production of weapons and ships-ready for use New technology: –machine gun –tank, U-boats –Mustard gas, aeroplane

7 Mnemonic devise M= Militarism A=Alliances I=Imperialism N=Nationalism Put them all together and it spells MAIN as in main long-term causes of WW 1.
