The three main categories of waste include municipal solid waste, industrial waste, and hazardous waste. –Municipal solid waste comes from homes, institutions, and small businesses. –Industrial waste comes from production of consumer goods, mining, agriculture, and petroleum extraction and refining. –Hazardous waste is any waste that is toxic, chemically reactive, flammable, or corrosive.

Modern sanitary landfills are carefully engineers to prevent contamination of groundwater, soil and air. Incineration is a controlled process in which garbage is control burned at very high temperatures.
