Thankful Thursday! * Think of one thing you are thankful for today. Bell-Work: 5 Minutes Silent-Sustained Reading *While you are reading, recognize any figurative language in your book. Write it down in your journal in the nifty words and phrases section. Be ready to share out during the opening.

“Firework” Analysis-Work Period-5-10 Minutes Chunking-Analyze your assigned stanza – Identify any poetic devices. Figurative Language: Similes, metaphors, hyperboles, allusion, irony, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration, repetition (probably does not have all of them) What is the effect of the figurative language? – What is its purpose? What does it add to the poem? – What is the meaning/interpretation of your stanza? – What is the rhyme scheme of your stanza? Present your stanza to the class

“Firework” Analysis-Work Period-20 Minutes Answer the following questions regarding the entire poem. 1.What does the repetition in the poem emphasize? 2.What is the message/theme the poet is trying to convey to the reader? The poets most like wrote this poem to.... 3.How can the reader tell this poem is a lyrical poem? 4.What is the figurative meaning of line 19? 5.In the 3 rd stanza, what does “the light” symbolize? 6.Identify the speaker’s tone in the beginning? After the shift? Identify the words or phrases that contribute to the speaker’s tone. 7.What is the speaker trying to convey in the 1 st and 2 nd stanza? 8. Where does the shift occur? (Where does the speaker’s attitude change?)
